FENNA TUSOME INITIATIVE
Fenna Tusome Initiative: Building Minds, One Book at a time.
Every day, hundreds of caregivers sit with their children in the waiting areas of Jinja Regional Referral Hospital (JRRH) Pediatric Unit. They wait for immunization slots, for growth monitoring, for review appointments at the different chronic care clinics, sometimes for hours. For a small child, that stretch of waiting is often spent restless, bored, or glued to a caregiver's phone. It is, in many ways, wasted time.
Nurtured to Thrive Uganda saw something different in the waiting areas: an opportunity.
What Is Fenna Tusome?
Fenna Tusome, Luganda for "Let Us All Read", is a clinic-based literacy and book-lending initiative designed to bring early childhood reading directly into the healthcare setting. The idea is simple but powerful: turn the dead time families spend waiting for clinic services into moments of language exposure, bonding, and early stimulation.
Rather than treating the clinic visit as purely a medical transaction, Fenna Tusome reframes it as a touchpoint for early childhood development. Books, picture cards, and read-aloud corners are placed where caregivers and children already gather, so that literacy-building happens organically, without asking families to travel anywhere new or add another commitment to already stretched schedules.
The name itself reflects a deliberate choice: the programme was originally conceived under a different working title before being renamed and culturally grounded in a phrase that Basoga and Baganda caregivers alike would recognize as an invitation, not an instruction.
Why a Hospital, of All Places?
It might seem unusual to root a literacy programme inside a hospital rather than a school or a library. But that is precisely the point.
In the Busoga sub-region, many of the children who would benefit most from early stimulation are also children whose families face barriers to consistent clinic attendance, missed appointments, delayed immunizations, and loss to follow-up (LTFU) are real, documented challenges. Fenna Tusome is being designed not just as a nice-to-have literacy add-on, but as an initiative that speaks to this problem directly: if reading corners and book-lending make the clinic experience warmer, more engaging, and more worth returning to, they may also become a quiet lever for improving appointment adherence and reducing dropout from care.
In other words, the books are not separate from the health outcomes. They are part of the strategy.
Grounded in Evidence, Built for Busoga
The Fenna Tusome concept note draws on the growing global evidence base around early literacy exposure, caregiver-child interaction, and the long-term cognitive and socio-emotional benefits of reading in a child's earliest years. It sits comfortably within Nurtured to Thrive Uganda's broader Two-Generation (2Gen) Early Childhood Development model, which addresses Health, Nutrition, Education, Socioeconomic Empowerment, and Child Protection and Family Strengthening as interconnected pillars, not siloed programmes.
A pilot budget has been developed to bring the concept to life at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital and what remains is seeing the pieces falling in place, one by one.
A Small Idea With a Big Premise
At its heart, Fenna Tusome rests on a simple belief: that a child's right to early learning shouldn't pause at the clinic door. Waiting areas across Busoga don't have to be places where time is lost, they can become places where a love of reading begins.
Fenna Tusome. Let us all read.
