She Carried Everything Alone

Image
Baby Grace lived for three months in a world that withheld nearly everything from her. Her mother, twenty years old and carrying HIV, carried even more. This is a story of what it means to be left behind, and what it means when someone finally shows up. There is a particular kind of silence that falls on a hospital ward when a baby who in adversity was born prematurely but somehow lived on for six months suddenly stops breathing. It is different from the ordinary quiet of early morning. It is heavier. It has a shape. It settles over a mother who has not eaten since yesterday afternoon, who is twenty years old, who is alone, and who has just lost the only person she came here to keep alive. That silence fell yesterday, in a pediatric ward somewhere in Jinja. And in its wake, it left a young woman, we will call her Grace's Mother, facing a future that, at this moment, must feel like it has no shape at all.   A tribute to the baby girl who began the journey of Nurturing Futures Plus with us, and whose memory will guide everything we do. Baby Grace 6 months old  ·  First beneficiary of the Nurturing Futures Plus Programme Received into the programme with love. Accompanied to the very end. This morning, at 09:18 am, we said goodbye to Baby Grace, a six-month-old baby girl who, without knowing it, carried the weight of our programme's very first steps. She was more than a beneficiary. But back at her home, she had been living with five other children in circumstances...

How Nurtured to Thrive Uganda's community outreach programme is transforming early childhood health across Jinja City's most underserved neighborhoods. In the bustling lanes of Jinja City, where the Nile marks the horizon and everyday life moves at the rhythm of tight community bonds, there are children and young women whose potential is quietly at risk, not from lack of strength or ability, but from gaps in support, information, and care. Nurtured to Thrive Uganda (NTT) exists to bridge those gaps. Through its flagship Nurturing Futures Plus (NF+) programme , NTT has built a structured community outreach model that goes beyond clinic walls, meeting families where they are, building trust where it matters, and delivering integrated care that no single institution could provide alone. "We don't wait for families to find us. We go to them, with compassion, with knowledge, and with the conviction that every child deserves a thriving start."-   Lubega John Paul, Fo...
