Nurtured to Thrive Uganda
Together Raising Thriving Children Through Empowered Caregivers and Resilient Communities.
Across Uganda, thousands of children face challenges that threaten their ability to grow, learn, and thrive. Poverty, inadequate early childhood services, limited caregiver support, and social vulnerabilities continue to affect the wellbeing of young children, particularly those in underserved and vulnerable communities. Yet every child deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy, safe, nurtured, and prepared for the future.
This is the vision behind Nurtured to Thrive Uganda, a transformative organization dedicated to strengthening early childhood development and building resilient families and communities through innovative, evidence-based interventions.
Who We Are
Nurtured to Thrive Uganda is a child-focused, Community Based Organization headquartered in Jinja City, Uganda, dedicated to improving the wellbeing and future of vulnerable children, including children with disabilities and those living in underserved and marginalized communities.
We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to grow up healthy, safe, nurtured, and empowered to reach their full potential. Our work is rooted in the understanding that when caregivers are supported and empowered, children are more likely to thrive emotionally, socially, physically, and academically.
Through partnerships with families, communities, institutions, and local leaders, we strengthen the systems that shape children’s lives by promoting responsive caregiving, early childhood development, inclusive education, community resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.
At Nurtured to Thrive Uganda, we work to create safe, inclusive, and supportive environments where children can learn, grow, and flourish regardless of their background or circumstances.
Our mission is simple but powerful:
To nurture children, empower caregivers, and transform communities for sustainable child wellbeing and development.
Our Two-Generation Approach
At the heart of our work is a Two-Generation Model of Implementation, which recognizes that children’s wellbeing is inseparable from the wellbeing of their caregivers.
Rather than focusing only on children, our approach simultaneously strengthens:
Young Children (0–5 years) through quality early childhood development support
Caregivers through economic empowerment, parenting support, and psychosocial strengthening
Communities and Systems through partnerships, advocacy, and institutional capacity building
This holistic approach ensures lasting impact by addressing the root causes of vulnerability while creating sustainable support structures for families.
Our Four Strategic Pillars
1. Household-Level Early Childhood Development Support
Healthy child development begins at home.
We equip caregivers with practical skills and knowledge to provide nurturing care through:
Responsive caregiving
Positive parenting practices
Play-based learning
Child stimulation and communication
Nutrition and child wellbeing education
Home visits and caregiver action planning
These interventions strengthen caregiver-child relationships and create safe, stimulating home environments where children can learn and develop.
2. Economic Strengthening and Livelihood Support
A caregiver’s ability to nurture depends heavily on household stability.
We help families build economic resilience through:
Financial literacy training
Savings groups
Entrepreneurship mentorship
Income-generating activities
Small business support
Market and employment linkages
When caregivers become economically empowered, they are better positioned to meet their children’s developmental needs.
3. Improving Early Childhood Services and Learning Environments
Quality early childhood services lay the foundation for lifelong learning.
We work with communities and institutions to improve:
Early childhood centers
Inclusive learning spaces
Caregiver and teacher capacity
Learning materials and resources
Child-friendly environments
ECD management systems
This ensures that children access safe, inclusive, and high-quality early learning opportunities.
4. Community Systems Strengthening and Policy Engagement
Sustainable child wellbeing requires strong systems.
We collaborate with:
Local governments
Community leaders
Education and health institutions
Development partners
Civil society actors
Together, we strengthen policy implementation, advocate for child-responsive systems, and promote community ownership of child development initiatives.
Guided by the Nurturing Care Framework
Our work aligns with the globally recognized Nurturing Care Framework, which emphasizes five essential components for early childhood development:
Good Health
Adequate Nutrition
Safety and Security
Responsive Caregiving
Opportunities for Early Learning
These pillars guide our programming and ensure that our interventions address the full spectrum of child wellbeing.
Why Our Work Matters
Research consistently shows that the early years of life are critical for brain development, learning capacity, and long-term wellbeing.
When children receive nurturing care in these formative years, they are more likely to:
Perform better in school
Develop stronger social and emotional skills
Experience improved health outcomes
Become productive members of society
By investing in caregivers and communities today, we secure a stronger future for Uganda tomorrow.
Our Vision for Uganda
We envision a Uganda where:
Every child is healthy, safe, and thriving
Every caregiver is empowered and supported
Every community is resilient and child-responsive
Every system protects and promotes child development
This vision is ambitious, but achievable through collaboration, innovation, and shared commitment.
