A Plate of Comfort: Feeding Hope on the Children's Ward

Image
Nurtured to Thrive Uganda · Nurturing Futures Plus Inside the quiet, exhausting work of caring for a sick child in hospital, and the simple meal that makes it a little more bearable. For a caregiver sitting beside a hospital bed for the third, fourth, or tenth day in a row, the hardest question of the day is rarely about medicine. It is about food, whose, when, and from where. Across Busoga, families whose children are admitted for severe acute malnutrition, tuberculosis, HIV, or sickle cell disease often travel far from home, arriving with little more than a change of clothes and the hope that their child will recover. Hospital wards neither feed caregivers nor patients, and many of these mothers, grandmothers, and fathers stretch every last coin toward transport and medication, leaving nothing for their own meals. Days blur into each other. Hunger becomes background noise to worry. It is in this gap that Nurtured to Thrive Uganda's Nurturing Futures Plus (NF+) programme steps i...

Inside the Home Visit: How Nutured to Thrive Uganda Brings Nurturing Care to the Doorstep

Inside the Home Visit: How Nutured to Thrive Uganda Brings Nurturing Care to the Doorstep. A moment from a weekend home visit in Mayuge district: a page from "Zoom Along" becomes a starting point for language, imagination, and connection. Some of the most important work Nurtured to Thrive Uganda  does happens far from any clinic waiting room or office desk. It happens on a woven mat spread across a swept compound, in the shade of a brick wall, with a picture book open between two pairs of hands. This past weekend, that was exactly the scene during one of our routine home visits to a Nurturing Futures Plus (NF+) beneficiary family in Mayuge district. Home visits are not an add-on to our programming; they are one of its foundations. They are how the Home-Based Early Childhood Development (ECD) model moves from concept to daily practice, and how we make good on the promise at the centre of NF+: that every child, regardless of where they are born or what their family is going t...

FENNA TUSOME INITIATIVE

Image
Fenna Tusome Initiative: Building Minds, One Book at a time. Every day, hundreds of caregivers sit with their children in the waiting areas of Jinja Regional Referral Hospital (JRRH) Pediatric Unit. They wait for immunization slots, for growth monitoring, for review appointments at the different chronic care clinics, sometimes for hours. For a small child, that stretch of waiting is often spent restless, bored, or glued to a caregiver's phone. It is, in many ways, wasted time. Nurtured to Thrive Uganda  saw something different in the waiting areas: an opportunity. What Is Fenna Tusome? Fenna Tusome,  Luganda for "Let Us All Read", is a clinic-based literacy and book-lending initiative designed to bring early childhood reading directly into the healthcare setting. The idea is simple but powerful: turn the dead time families spend waiting for clinic services into moments of language exposure, bonding, and early stimulation. Rather than treating the clinic visit ...

She Carried Everything Alone

Image
Baby Grace lived for three months in a world that withheld nearly everything from her. Her mother, twenty years old and carrying HIV, carried even more. This is a story of what it means to be left behind, and what it means when someone finally shows up. There is a particular kind of silence that falls on a hospital ward when a baby who in adversity was born prematurely but somehow lived on for six months suddenly stops breathing. It is different from the ordinary quiet of early morning. It is heavier. It has a shape. It settles over a mother who has not eaten since yesterday afternoon, who is twenty years old, who is alone, and who has just lost the only person she came here to keep alive. That silence fell yesterday, in a pediatric ward somewhere in Jinja. And in its wake, it left a young woman, we will call her Grace's Mother, facing a future that, at this moment, must feel like it has no shape at all. Born Too Soon, Into Too Little Baby Grace entered the world at six months of...

Remembering Baby Grace — our first, our belovedđź’›

A tribute to the baby girl who began the journey of Nurturing Futures Plus with us, and whose memory will guide everything we do. Baby Grace 6 months old  ·  First beneficiary of the Nurturing Futures Plus Programme Received into the programme with love. Accompanied to the very end. This morning, at 09:18 am, we said goodbye to Baby Grace, a six-month-old baby girl who, without knowing it, carried the weight of our programme's very first steps. She was more than a beneficiary. She was the beginning. When the Nurturing Futures Plus (NF+) programme enrolled its first families here in Jinja City, Baby Grace was among them. She came to us as a known HIV patient who we first made contact with on 4th March 2026 during her very first admission at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital Pediatric Unit where she had been newly diagnosed with HIV, severe pneumonia with PJP, and severe acute malnutrition. But back at her home, she had been living with five other children in circumstances...

REACHING THE MOST VULNERABLE- ONE HOUSEHOLD AT A TIME

Image
How Nurtured to Thrive Uganda's community outreach programme is transforming early childhood health across Jinja City's most underserved neighborhoods. In the bustling lanes of Jinja City, where the Nile marks the horizon and everyday life moves at the rhythm of tight community bonds, there are children and young women whose potential is quietly at risk, not from lack of strength or ability, but from gaps in support, information, and care. Nurtured to Thrive Uganda (NTT) exists to bridge those gaps. Through its flagship Nurturing Futures Plus (NF+) programme , NTT has built a structured community outreach model that goes beyond clinic walls, meeting families where they are, building trust where it matters, and delivering integrated care that no single institution could provide alone. "We don't wait for families to find us. We go to them, with compassion, with knowledge, and with the conviction that every child deserves a thriving start."-   Lubega John Paul, Fo...
